How to Boost Your Home WiFi Signal Without Buying New Gear

Struggling with weak WiFi at home? Discover easy ways to boost your signal with simple adjustments, without splurging on new equipment.

Are you fed up with weak WiFi spots in your home? Nothing's worse than buffering in the middle of your favourite show or getting cut off during a Zoom meeting due to poor signal. But before you rush off to buy new gadgets or an expensive router, there's plenty you can do to improve your WiFi without splashing out. Here are some handy tips to get you started.

Find the Sweet Spot

First off, let's chat about where your router is parked. It might sound like a no-brainer, but you're gonna want your router smack dab where it can shine best. Routers send out signals in all directions, so place yours centrally in your home on a higher shelf or surface to help those signals fly far and wide.

Metal objects, walls, and especially water (like fish tanks) can all block that WiFi signal, so keep your router away from them. If your router’s jammed back in the corner next to a load of electronic gear, it might just be struggling to expand its full potential.

Channel Your Inner Techie

If you've got neighbours in close range with their own WiFi setups, there's every chance your WiFi channels could be clogged. Your router operates on a specific channel, and sometimes, the default ones are a bit like rush hour traffic.

Most modern routers can switch channels automatically, but diving into your router settings and manually picking a less crowded channel on the 2.4GHz band could work wonders. It does sound a bit techy, but most routers have an app or an interface you can access pretty easily on your phone or computer.

Get to Know Your Frequencies

Let's dive into the 2.4GHz vs 5GHz debate. Your WiFi runs on these two bands, and choosing between them can affect your connectivity. The 2.4GHz band covers a broader area and better at penetrating walls, making it great for larger spaces or when you're a couple of rooms away from the router.

The 5GHz band, on the other hand, offers faster speeds but doesn't travel as far. If you're streaming or gaming and you're close to the router, go for 5GHz. Have a look at your device settings to select the right band for your needs.

Say Goodbye to Interference

Don't forget about all those household gadgets that can muck up your WiFi signal. Microwaves, cordless phones, even some baby monitors operate on frequencies that may interfere with your router.

Try moving your router away from these devices and communicate with less interference. Give your router some space so it doesn't squabble with your microwave over whose signal is stronger.

When to Consider a Mesh System

Look, at times even after all your best efforts, the issue might just be too big for minor tweaks. If you find some spots are still stubbornly resisting WiFi, it might be time to think about a mesh system. Mesh networks work by placing several small routers around your home, creating a blanket of coverage.

If your home's big or shaped like a rabbit warren, a mesh system could be the answer. But as always, let's try all the free options first!

The Kiwi Way

Improving your WiFi doesn't always mean shelling out on new kit. A few tweaks here and there can make a world of difference.
